StrategyOne: Economic Outlook July 2010 Contact Info: Bradley Honan Senior Vice President, StrategyOne 212-704-8295 Bradley.Honan@strategyone.net http://www.strategyone.net
Survey Methodology StrategyOne conducted 1,050 online interviews among a representative sampling of Americans between June 25 and 27, 2010.? The overall margin of sampling error at the 95% level of confidence is = +/- 3.02% overall and larger for subgroups. Statistical weights were designed from the United States Census Bureau statistics.?
Key Insights & Conclusions StrategyOne’s recent survey found that Americans see a double-dip recession as a real possibility and fear Europe’s financial problems will harm the US economy. 65% of Americans say it’s likely that the US will experience a double dip recession, compared with just 35% who say it’s not likely to happen.? 72% believe that Europe’s financial problems are likely to harm the US’ economic recovery, compared with just 28% who say the US is largely insulated. Additionally, the survey also found that 57% of Americans are fearful about running out of money in the next year and 44%―nearly half the country― agrees that if things get much worse, they could easily see their family slipping into bankruptcy.? This is not surprising given that two in three (67%) Americans report they are living paycheck to pay check—making it clear just how many American families are living on the edge.
Key Insights & Conclusions Americans report being not just financially bruised, they are emotionally bruised, too. 77% report the economic recession has significantly changed their outlook on life.? Since the recession began, many Americans have reevaluated their approach to life (58%), become less hopeful about the future (52%) and/or came to the realization that in their life they would probably fall short of their personal or professional goals (49%). In addition, significant numbers of Americans report their temperaments and behaviors have changed―for the worse―since the recession began in December 2007, becoming more easily angry or emotional (42%), becoming more depressed or are frequently sad (41%), and/ or finding themselves screaming or raising their voice more frequently since the recession began (33%).
Key Insights & Conclusions Further, many Americans are putting major life decisions on hold. The recession is specifically cited for causing: 27% of women 18-34 years old to delay having a baby or child 21% of Americans 55 years or older to postpone retirement 18% of single Americans to postpone getting married or engaged 9% of married Americans put off getting a divorce
