  2. IMPACT OPENING –10 mins Taimi Introduce Activity – Participants choose an “eye” card they feel represents “Madness” to them Give your image a “label”. Go around the room say one word or phrase that sums up the image you’ve chosen. There may be some words, or phrases that are repeated, but try if you can to say something new. Miriam Scribe
  3. INTRODUCTION Who we are and why we’re here (don’t mention PWEMI yet) Taimi will introduce self and MBC i.e. – 11 th year of operation in Mental Health Support Sector, NZ Leaders in Peer Support Training and operation, CA’s to ADHB MH Services advise on policy and procedure, systemic advocacy and LMLM contracts for MH promotion and education. Mother, Stewarts Wife working here 3 years before that was amongst other things, flight attendant, banker, cook, actor & butler. Asked to come along and de-mystify mental illness for you. A word on the language we use, humour and honesty, not PC looking at attitudes not words. Miriam will introduce self ( like above) and explain LMLM programme i.e. Like Minds, Like Mine is a public education programme aimed at reducing the stigma and discrimination faced by people with experience of mental illness. The programme is funded by the Ministry of Health and guided by the Like Minds National Plan and stemmed from the 1996 - inquiry into mental health services by Judge Ken Mason Around the world, stigma and discrimination is one of the major barriers to a person's recovery. But changing attitudes and behaviour in society is complex, so the Like Minds programme works on a variety of levels to try to achieve this. The majority of its work is undertaken by several national contractors and a team of 26 Like Minds providers The Like Minds, Like Mine logo uses the mathematical symbol ≥, which stands for greater than or equal to. Used for the programme, it means ‘greater than discrimination, equal to others'. The Maori tagline: ‘whakaitia te whakawhiu i te tangata' means ‘reduce your potential to discriminate'. 5. Taimi - PURPOSE The Purpose of this workshop is to rethink how we look at and feel about mental illness or distress. Click through; ROADMAP Explore 3 key themes. - Confront Madness- Look at society’s attitudes to mental illness and why we think that way. - Experience Madness and Recovery – we’re all a little mad (continuums) - Understand Madness (stats) Your resource folders contain some complimentary information and hand-out’s and there is additional resources available on the table.
  6. MAD WORDS What words/labels have we associated with the word Madness? Think back to first memories Encourage use of Labels, societal stereotypes etc. What those with experience of MI answered to the same “words” question Discuss why we chose these words, where did we get them from. As soon as someone mentions “Media” bring up the NEXT SLIDE
  7. HEADLINES (Stop at Brittany “Insane” – 8 clicks)
  8. Click through headlines slowly Discuss.. With all these negative headlines, why don’t we think badly of Social Workers? Would you want to be one if it did? Would you want to tell people you were a social worker. Someone inevitably answers “because I have met/know a social worker etc” “ But you know plenty of mad people too...” go to next slide
  9. When you mention (Sting, Buzz Aldrin etc) what’s the first word that comes to mind? (Not Mental Illness) Any others? Britany Spears, Mel Gibson John Kirwan Silvia Plath etc
  10. Taimi and Miriam – “Attitude Assessments” and “Taking Steps” Activities Taimi start with ? group doing Attitude Assesments (Agree or Disagree) Miriam start with ? group doing Taking Steps (discrimination) Facilitators Swap Activities after 10-15 mins, do new activity with same group. Keep conversation short, stay on time.
  11. End of activity sum up 1 min
  12. 10 min break, Use the time to look over the resources and fill your info packs. Take some squeezie-bricks, not enough for everyone. (10 or 11)
  13. Taimi - PURPOSE The Purpose of this workshop is to rethink how we look at and feel about mental illness or distress. ROADMAP Explore 3 key themes.
  14. Taimi “Turn up the Volume” We are going to try now, turning up the volume on our normal emotions, feelings, thoughts and behaviour to see if we might actually know how it feels to experience Mental Distress. Are you all familiar with these experiences? Anyone not experienced these things ever? You all just travelled a little on the roller-coaster we like to call; NEXT SLIDE
  15. Explain 3 scales, health, normality and acceptability Most of those experiences in the last slide we could all relate to having experienced. If we were to look at a continuum from Mental Health to mental ill health – they would pretty much all be in the green… yes? Increase fear , slide up the scale increase stigma and discrimination. Increase understanding, slide down the scale, decrease stigma and discrimination. What the LMLM programme has been able to achieve in 10 years for anxiety and depression. Now lets help us increase our understanding by looking at another type of continuum; that of TIME NEXT SLIDE
  16. Squirts/Timelines Activity Both have early trauma, both make it to Uni, one has an experience of mental Distress, the other doesnt. Instead of concentrating on the person who became unwell (it makes sense in context of trauma) lets concentrate on the person who was able to stay well. What might they have had that the other didnt? Brainstorm in groups or on board Sum up - Click What we came up with in this activity were a whole lot of resilience tools and factors which can help ‘turn the volume down’ on distress. Some of us know these innately, and some of us have to learn or be taught these tools. The biggest barrier to peoples recovery and therefore their ability to learn these tools is stigma, both from others and within oneself (self stigma) So what’s the trick to changing attitudes towards Mental Disorder then? It’s easy NEXT SLIDE
  17. French anthropologist came up with this easy equation on how to change attitudes, give you a minute or two to work it out, shouldn’t take too long. Want a clue? Click for rocket to fly past Give up? - Click answer – (Its actually the equation for a rocket in flight) And that’s where we come in NEXT SLIDE
  18. Personal Stories – time to disclose PWEMI
  19. From research on what people have found useful “other than medication” ie; they may or may not have found meds useful – but what are the other pieces of the recovery jigsaw for people? Disclaimer – lower percentages do not mean lower usefulness of supports, just that less respondents used it/ had access to it.
  20. Simple tools to manage distress that anyone can use (from DBT/CBT) Give examples
  21. Other Models of Mental Health/Recovery Te Whare Tapa Wha, Fono Fale etc. Activity Get into 5 groups – each group gets a “piece” of mental health to work with & post it notes. Brain storm as many things within your category that could contribute to it tipping off balance, be as specific as you like… What supports / tools or techniques could you use to re-address the balance? For example – your group has Occupational Wellbeing > you might identify Financial Strain as an issue There might be many separate issues you identify under that but From that you might drill it down > Debt> Financial Advice & Debt Consolidation This model is more of a model of various types of mental wellbeing rather than a model of mental health itself – to be a model of mental health it would need to include some thoughts-beliefs-information processing of some kind. This model doesn’t say much about how we work or what creates mental health, but it does speak to the multiple different ways in which we can be affected and how those different spheres also affect each other. Spiritual Health ought to be defined as Wairua = container for something unique – spiritual health as something that connects people with their uniqueness.

  23. 3:24 – 3:30 Miriam click through Title and first point – MD is common in NZ: As Taimi gets to the right number of pax, bring up next point and explain. Taimi Ask “Normal” questions until ? room stand up WHO; Didn’t want to get out of bed this morning Had a “decent” breakfast this morning Drove their own car here today Has yet to celebrate a birthday this year Has a flatmate Has a sibling Has only one brother Leave 40% standing Picked up a squeezie brick/pencil Leave 20% standing Half of those standing sit down (5 pax) Stand on one leg/hands above/close eyes Those on left encourage(positive voice/support) those on their right – discourage (negative voices/lack of support) Discuss what happened – who wavered, reached out for support, gave up, reacted, survived, had tools & techniques etc?
  24. We’re not saying medication is bad, we just think that this form of treatment is “covered” so to speak, its funded and if you were unwell the chances are you’d be offered medication. We just want you to know that there lots of things that can help, and you don’t need to be a prescriber of mental health professional to be able to help. What could you offer as a; Social Worker Friend Partner Colleague Public etc etc...
  25. Allow 15 mins

  32. CONCLUSION Mental Illness is a Normal Human experience It’s not the words we use, but the way we think, and how we treat others – the same as everyone else! I hope this workshop has given you the opportunity to RETHiNK how we look at Madness Would you choose the same “eye” now? If time - repeat “Eye of the Beholder” activity How many of you may now contemplate working in Mental Health?
